A stylish room makeover with a customized patterned carpet
Imagine standing in your stylish kitchen and cooking up a storm. A fabulous dinner for you and your soon-to-be-expected guests, it's near ready and you are salivating merely thinking of it. When, of course last minute, a big fat splash of creamy, intensely colored goodness lands on your bland scandi beige kitchen carpet.
Well, I could've warned you in advance. Your guests would secretly pooh-pooh your boring choice of color anyway, and it's a bad combo with cookery to boot. I myself love to cook and sometimes entertain and am no stranger to such happenings. So when I happend to see that my dear friends of pabuku whimsical vintage collage art fame, Ulla and Ute (DO check them out if you love quirky stuff!), had at one point cooperated with a european-based carpeting company, I was instantly intrigued.
And: thinking about my patterns, of course. I did some research and inquired about customized patterned carpet prints. I was elated to hear that they could accomodate my wishes for a small customization fee on top (under 20€!) while many sizes and different types of heavy duty carpets, from home furnishings to booth carpeting for fairs, were available. Thinking of my business first, I ordered two long and lean statement rugs to fit my elongated, narrow office space. I chose to deck it in one of my all-time favorite patterns to wow clients on the first look: Yup, definitely a pattern designer that works here! And, you guessed it: more moray eels.
What can I say: I just love ’em.
The carpets I ordered (or rather: dirt-catching mats, as they are marketed) are made in the EU and of short-fiber, high-twist Nylon Polyamid which makes them sturdy and stain-resistant while absorbant to protect sensitive surfaces. They come with an integrated non-slip nitrile gum underside. I like the fuzzy soft feel under my feet and that they are machine-washable up to 60°C in your humble washing machine.
What I learned: go big or go home.
Careful though: Finer details are lost in the curly structure of these rugs, so bold scaling is key. Also, if you want to have a seamless transition when you order two rugs to connect like I did, definitely go the extra mile to ask for a template with a bleed and stress the importance of machting up (meaning, the overlap that has to be cut away to make the design match up perfectly where they connect). Mine were missing about 3cm of pattern repeat to do so, but decided to let it be. Perfection in imperfection and all that.

Another idea came to my mind: our kitchen is in dire need of some protective pattern love, too! Wouldn't it look nice in twofold morays?
I swiftly took to my camera and mocked up in Photoshop what some of my favorite patterns would look like on our kitchen floor. Since it is a really long and narrow space and prone to look like a war zone after a cook-up, it would be the perfect spot for the next statement piece:
